Phoenix Design Week 2015

Phoenix Design Week is an annual, week-long series of events to bring together the Phoenix Design Community.

Phoenix Design Week and the Method + Madness conference have played a critical role in the history of Strong Design. So when we were asked to take up the role of Design Chair in 2015, we jumped at the chance and embarked on one of the most challenging and rewarding projects we've ever had the honor to have been a part of. The year’s Creative Director, Robert Renteria, came to us with a set of existing brand elements, including a logo, color palette, and typeface. We worked with him to mine his vision and carry that through a full set of marketing collateral for the event design. The design elements for the event were inspired by Native American symbols that are foundational to the history of the Southwest, and the overall design execution was done in a way that honored and showcased the most basic principles of design, like typography, white space, and finishing. The program was the pièce de résistance of the system, featuring a rich black paper cover with the symbol pattern blind embossed into it. It was finished off with bright green exposed side-sewn stitching. The icing on top of our months of hard work is that the campaign was awarded with a Bronze Addy award the following year, and the conference program was featured on the highly-regarded design blog, For Print Only.

“I'm truly grateful for the role Strong Design played on the PHXDW 2015 team. If it wasn't for Melissa’s attention to detail, desire to create beautiful work, and her willingness to collaborate on each part of the process the event would not have looked or run a fraction as good as it did. Her ability to support every facet of the design process was invaluable.”
